Quattro Rally Ready to Come Home

Well, the seats are sold. That has freed up some space on the parts shelf at least. The shell is still up north at Cherry Classic Cars but we are expecting the call any day now. It's basically just waiting for the primer to dry then it will be ready to drag back down state and start bolting parts on. It was decided to do this in primer as there...

911 Sno*Drift Pilgrimage

The end of January saw our annual pilgrimage to the Sno*Drift Rally about 4 hours north of us in Atlanta, Michigan. Despite the name This particular Atlanta normally offers frigid temperatures and lots of snow but this more resembled its warmer namesake to the south. Much of the snow had melted and refrozen during the preceeding week making the roads an giant, elongated ice rink. Still, as we were only...

Quattro Rally Build Coming Home Soon?

The rally Quattro is still up north at Cherry Classic Cars but it's coming along nicely. We might get it back as early as this month! Meanwhile here are some more updates. A few weeks ago we were summoned up to CCC to help figure out how to deal with this poor bumper fitment issue: Should the bumper go behind the quarter panel or should it butt up and why...

911 Top End Teardown

Tear down is nearly complete so we took the car off the lift and pushed it back into the showroom. Looks odd so high in the rear. It didn't take long before we found our first issue. This might need cleaning.   We soon had the intake manifold off the engine.   and found some more, not unexpected problems.   A bit more wrench wiggling and we had the shroud...

83 Quattro Rally Build June Update

Rear diff is back together with new seals. Now we need to decide what color to paint it.   Amanda has started painting stripes on the model.   We borrowed an OE refinished rear caliper and decided this is the way to go with ours.   In anticipation of panels showing up Thompson Racing Fabrication took the car out of storage and delivered it to Cherry Classic Cars. Worlds Quickest 911 Engine Removal.

We think it went well. Plugs look OK too We have a five week window before we need the car again...

85 UR Quattro Is So Clean

Took the car to AutoEurope in Birmingham for: new tires alignment detailing dent removal Now so clean. Hadn't been cleaned for three years! They did a great job. Shame it's parked back in the showroom and not in my drive. Next on the agenda is to address the hesitation under load at around 3-4000rpm. Any ideas?

85 UR Quattro Needs Some Tires

HELP US CHOOSE SOME TIRES. The Kumho all seasons (no seasons) that are on the car are done so it's time for some new rubber. The stock size of 215/50-15 is NLA in anything affordable and streetable so it's going to be 225/50-15 again. The car does not see winter so summer tires are a must. I don't track it but want the most grip I can afford in case...

Scattered Progress Quattro Squad Rally Build

Scattered progress since our last update but progress non-the-less. We started to attack the drive shaft last week. The CV joints seem a bit stiff so we are going to clean them out and see if we can save them. If not we think we can replace them. The universal joint in the center seems fine but we might have to destroy it removing the center support bearing which is...

85 Quattro. Diff Done!

Well, the diff project is done, not without with some casualties. Read on………. Our friend Carlos, a venerated old car genius, made a jig for the press to keep everything aligned while pressing in the notorious pair of small sub frame bushings. The large pair went in like you’d hope a bushing went in: easily. Well that didn’t work and we destroyed one $50, only available from Germany bushing. Apparently...
